New Year’s (Swimming) Resolutions

Every year we hear about how people make New Year’s resolutions and how they plan to stick to them.  Considering we only have about two months in the season for most of you (4 for Masters) I have come up with a few easy resolutions for swimmers that reinforce good training habits and will help you become a better swimmer.  I have also included some explanations for these resolutions.  Pick a few that fit you and resolve to make them good habits by the end of the season:

  1. I will be on time for warm-up:  While this is not always easy and not always possible but it should be a goal to be on deck by the time practice starts.  It is important to help your teammates set-up the pool.  It is important to stretch and get mentally prepared to swim.  It is helpful to the coaches so we can easily assign lanes and run the practice effectively.  It is important to swim the whole warm-up so you can be ready for the whole workout and so you do not open up the opportunity for injury.
  2. I will bring an extra cap/goggles to meets and practice:  Everyone should have at least one extra pair of goggles in their bag.  If you wear swim caps make sure to pack one or two extra in case one breaks and make sure to put some talcum powder on them every now and then so they do not mold and split.
  3. I will maintain my flexibility away from the pool:  Successful swimmers are not only strong but flexible too.  Make sure to stretch after hard workouts and on your own away from the pool when you have time.
  4. I will swim the entire warm-down at every practice with good technique:  Maintaining good technique when you are tired is a plus for when you race.  Going a few hundred yards easy after workout lets the body recover and allows the muscles to flush lactic acid.  This will help you avoid getting stiff for long periods of time after training.
  5. I will remember to pack my swimsuit: I am not going to explain this one.  Just bring proper attire for swimming.
  6. I will remember to pack clothes for dryland training (including a clean pair of athletic shoes):   Morays & Eels – Mon. & Wed.  You need the proper footwear to avoid ankle and foot injuries.  Make sure they are clean so you don’t mark up the deck. You need clothes so you won’t have to do the circuit in your swimsuit.
  7. I will compete in at least one meet a month:  The only way I can properly train and taper you is if you show up and race on a consistent basis.  Only by racing can I identify your training needs during taper.  Once a month is a good minimum so you can at least see where you are at during each training cycle.  High School girls – make sure to sign up for meets on time.
  8. I will show up every day with a positive attitude:  This helps everyone you train with swim better!  If you really want to be here then show it and have fun!  If you go into a workout with the opposite (negative attitude) it will affect your performance.  If you are mentally “up” to swim at workouts you will be mentally “up” for meets on a regular basis.

Hope these help out a bit.  You can come up with a few on your own as well if you wish.  We all have a few little things we need to change but these should help you focus on what those changes might be in this sport.  See ya at the pool.

December Swimmers of the Month:

Frost – Heejae Yoo

      Cubes – Stephanie Choi

Morays – Josh Schubert

Eels – Lauren Talman

*On Saturday Jan. 19th the Iowa City HS Boys will dual both HS teams (Hempstead & Senior) from Dubuque, Iowa at Mercer Park.  Due to this meet there will be practice for Morays, Eels, Cubes, and Masters at 7AM.  Frost will have no practice that day.  Sorry for the inconvenience. Everyone is encouraged to come and cheer on the ICE male swimmers representing Iowa City!

ICE All-Stars:  The following swimmers are attending The Midwestern All-Stars Meet this month as part of Team Iowa:  10 & Under Girls – Stephanie Choi, Beth Eyanson, and Sarah Striegel. 11-12 Girls- Christine Olson.  13 –14 Girls – Jacqueline Astor, Ashley Lawler, Amy Olson, and Anna Kampling.  ICE Coach Brian O’Dowd will be an assistant coach for Team Iowa as well.  Congratulations and good luck!

Masters Meets:  Reminder that there is the DMSF Masters meet coming up this month in Des Moines (Jan. 27th).  We will also help set up and compete in the University of Iowa Masters Swim Team meet on Feb. 17th at the Field house Pool.  More meets to be announced as we receive information.

Junior High swimming:  Any ICE swimmers participating in the junior high swim program during January and February should contact Don this week to let him know if you intend to only swim junior high or if you plan to also swim ICE during the junior high season. Swimmers participating in both will be expected to attend half the practices required for their group and will pay half the monthly fees.  For additional information, contact Don at 351-3336 or SwimIce@aol.com.

Meet sign up:  It is important to sign up for meets by the date listed on the calendar and entries folder. Typically, this sign up date is 15 days before the scheduled meet.  Sponsors require entries to be submitted 10 days before the meet and to insure we get everyone properly listed entries need to be submitted five days prior to that cutoff date.  It is to the swimmer’s benefit to be entered on time- some meets do not allow late entries at all and others will only do so only if space is available.  Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Fundraising: Anyone supporting the club via United Way contributions that wants to receive credit toward their fundraising requirement should contact Bryan Lawler as soon as possible.  As the end of our fiscal year approaches on March 31, Bryan needs to know when and how much was contributed. Other fundraising notes:

Wreath Sales:  The holiday wreath sale went very well.  Thank you to all the swimmers and parents who hit the streets to sell them.  We sold 196 wreaths and the club will recognize a profit of $2026.55!!  GREAT JOB!!

A special thank you to the Coral Fruit Market for their continued support to ICE.

The top sellers this year are as follows:

1st Place -- A tie between Andrea and Joshua Schubert  (25 each)

         2nd Place -- Ashley Lawler (16)

         3rd Place – Ashley Matteson (15)

Barnes & Noble Gift Wrapping:  Thank you to all swimmers and parents who volunteered to gift wrap.  You raised $188.01 for our club.

Fundraising Requirement Reminder:  As of this writing 40 ICE families have already met or exceeded their fundraising requirement for the winter/short course season.  CONGRATUALTIONS AND THANKS!!

The requirement is $50.00 per season for families with one swimmer and $75.00 per season for families with more than one swimmer.  This requirement is adjusted for high school swimmers and swimmers who only swim for a portion of the season.   The winter season runs through February 2002.  Any amounts still due at the end of February will become immediately payable.  The fundraising requirement will then be the same for the summer/long course season, which will run from April through July 2002.

Please contact me at 354-9005 or BLawler251@aol.com if you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns.  Thanks again for your support to ICE!

Swim officials orientation:  Jodie Theobald will be conducting a swim officials orientation clinic.  The date is not yet certain but will likely be in either February or March.  Attending a clinic is a necessary first step in becoming a USA Swimming official.  The clinic will last a couple of hours and will consist of watching a video on officiating, assistance with starting the take home test, and a general Q & A.  Being an official is not an easy job but it is a wonderful way to support the swimmers and the sport in general. If you are interested in attending or you need more information  feel free to contact Kelly at 339-7579 or e-mail at keleyn@inav.net,  you can also reach Jodie at ICTHEOBALD@aol.com.

Postal meet update: The Postal Meet was held December 29th and went quite well.  We had 31 swimmers and everyone seemed to have a good time.  Special thank you to all the parents who helped with running the meet- we could not have done this without you!  Statewide results of the meet should be available at the ISI website by the end of the month.  We are hoping to hold similar activities in the future and with a good volunteer and  swimmer participation turnout this goal seems quite probable.

ICE highlighters:  We have about 180 tri-color highlighters for sale.  The asking price is $2.00.  Handy for marking meet programs, they are triangular shaped, imprinted with the ICE logo and write in three colors.  Available at the ICE office at Mercer.

February social activities:  As the short course season winds down, here are a few dates to keep in mind.  On February 14th there will be a cookie night at both Coralville and Mercer.  This is both an end of season celebration and a spirited send off for those swimmers attending regionals the 16th & 17th.  On Wednesday the 20th there will be a spaghetti dinner at Mercer for swimmers attending the JO’s at Coe the following weekend. More information on these activities will be made available as the dates grow near.

Annual Parent Meeting: On March 24th we will be holding our annual Parent’s Meeting at 5:00 PM in the Robert A. Lee Recreation Center (downtown Iowa City).  This is a combination potluck-swimmer recognition- club business sort of affair.  This is always a good opportunity to get to know some of the swimmers and their families in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.  Best of all, the food is always good!

ICE Board vacancies: Several ICE Board members will be leaving when their terms expire this year.  Anyone interested in serving on the board can contact Jan Lawler at BLawler251@aol.com.  Maintaining a successful swim club is not an easy task but it is a manageable one if given enough interested  volunteers.  There is room for anyone and differing skills, experiences, and points of view are most welcome.  There will be three to four slots to fill for this upcoming year so all interested in serving are encouraged to contact Jan as soon as possible.

Safety chair opening: The ICE Board has a current opening for Safety Chair.  For more information please contact Jane at JaneAstor@msn.com .

ISI Clinic & Seminar:  ISI will be sponsoring a clinic and seminar the weekend of April 13th & 14th.  Details are still be worked out but there is a possibility that the clinic will be conducted by a recent Olympic swimmer.  In past years the event has been at the Field house but this year the activities may well take place in Cedar Rapids at Coe College.  Keep the date in mind and more concrete details will be announced as they become available.

Christine’s long course standings: Congratulations to ICE swimmer Christine Olson for making the Long Course Top 16 final standings in two events. Christine made the 10 & under Top 16 in the 200 Free and 50 Breast. In the Long Course final standings she placed #15 in the country in the 200 meter free with a 2:26.29 and placed 10th in the country in the 50 meter breast with a 39.43.  When final times are compiled for the short course season she may well have additional Top 16 times for 10 and unders.  Now that she is 11, Christine has new challenges to face but this observer has no doubt she will succeed!
