Holiday Training

We in the swimming community live on a different schedule compared to most athletes.  We are accustomed to morning workouts and weekend meets.  We also maintain our training at times when other sports have an off-season and take breaks.  One time when this is more apparent is during the winter holidays.

Due to the timing of our Short Course Championship season it is very important to train through the winter holidays.  It is the mid-point of our season and a time when elite caliber swimmers are switching from aerobic training to more race specific work.  It is the last big aerobic push of the season before racing and resting become the focus.  A lot of college and universities take their teams to places like Hawaii and Florida to train in excellent weather while increasing the workload.  I recall a few trips of my own that not only prepared me for my meets at the time but also gave me memories that remind me how unique our sport can be at times.

While at UNVL we went to Southern California and trained at Coronado before heading up the coast to Irvine and Santa Barbara for meets and more training.  I remember one morning after starting the workout in the dark at the pool in Coronado how pretty the sun looked coming over San Diego.  In the middle of a kick set a huge US Navy battle ship pulled into the bay under the bridge.  All of us in the sprint and breaststroke group stopped and watched as this huge ship went into the docks.  I thought it was really special to be a swimmer right then just to see that sight.

While on DMSF during my high school days we went to Rochester, MN the day after Christmas my junior year.  We actually went somewhere colder!  We did so because the local club in Rochester had access to the whole 50 Meter pool whenever they wanted the whole break.  There was a group of about 15 of us from both DMSF and CRAA and we trained twice daily for 7 days straight.  I roomed with one other swimmer and our head-coach Bill.  I was worried it would be weird hanging out with my coach but it turned out being a lot of fun.  I talked with Bill about swimming history, training, technique, and learned a bunch about the sport in the process.  Since I had not been a swimmer for very long it was something that really helped me and was as valuable as the intense training I did in the pool that trip.  Bill really opened my eyes to how the sport works and planted the seeds of my coaching career.

The next year we went to Arizona for our Christmas training.  By that time I did not mind at all rooming with Coach Bill and I knew what to expect with the training.  One aspect of that trip I recall is how we got to the pool one morning, the desert air still dark and cold, and started to strip down to get in.  I remember the steam rolling off the pool and watching everyone run as fast as they could out of our parkas and into the pool.  It was the only time I had ever seen all the swimmers run to warm-up at the same time.  I also remember watching the swimmers from the University of Arizona train at the same pool before and after us.  They were not only very graceful but also very strong.  Each lane was doing something different but kept on task.  One female butterfly swimmer was training with a group of the male swimmers and on a few sets outdoing them.  One year later that swimmer, Chrissy Ahman-Leighton, would make the Olympic team and win three medals at Barcelona.

During the Thanksgiving Break one year I had the pleasure (pain) of training with the Kansas City Blazers while visiting my relatives in Overland Park, KS.  I went to practice the day after Thanksgiving and trained with Head Coach Pete Malone’s group.  A few lanes over from where I was swimming was a short, muscular, and tanned guy doing an outrageous amount of butterfly.  He had purple scars up his side on his ribs from recent surgery.  He was no taller than me but was just going nuts on every set.  On sets that I was doing 8 x 200 freestyles on 2:30 negative split this dude was keeping up doing most of it fly!  The group I was training with finished and as I went to the locker room this guy and three others continued on with practice.  In the locker room I asked my cousin’s neighbor, who had drove us to the workout, who was in that lane swimming fly the whole time.  I found out it was Mark Dean, a 1988 Olympian, 1991 Pan American gold-medallist in the 200 Fly, and a former UCLA swimmer, who had a collapsed lung a year before and was on a comeback for the 1992 Olympic Trails.  Also in the pool that day were two future US Olympians, Janie Wagstaff (92) and Catherine Fox (96), swimming in the “animal lanes” with Mark Dean.  While I was drained from the workout that morning and I eventually fell asleep by 4p.m. that night I remember thinking how cool it was to have been in the same pool with such a talented group of swimmers.  I was very proud I completed that workout without missing an interval.   I was also very proud to know I had burned off all the calories from the day before.

While you may not have the chance to train in sunny weather, room with your coach for a week, or watch firsthand as some internationally ranked athletes practice you do have the chance to swim with some other teams, meet new swimmers, and build your own memories.  If you are planning on traveling over the break check out if there are teams in the area you are going to visit.  Most USA-S clubs will let any registered USA-S swimmers train with their clubs for little or no charge.  If there is not a club in your destination I have a book on places to swim all over the country and can direct you to a recreation center, a YMCA (which often have teams to swim with), or schools with pools so you can keep your training up. Don’t hesitate to ask for workouts to take with you from an ICE coach if you need one.  Whatever the case, enjoy the holidays, have fun with your families, and keep in shape so you don’t have to make any New Year’s resolutions concerning swimming.

See you in 2002!

All Stars reminder:  Midwestern All-Star forms are due December 19th!  Make sure if you are in the top 8 in any event on the ISI rankings to get your form to Doug Kolsrud.

Boys State Swim Meet assistance: ICE Masters, Eels, and Moray Swimmers – ICE has been asked to help with timers and runners at the IHSAA Boys State Swim Meet on Feb. 16th.  If you are not going to Regionals your help would be greatly appreciated.  Contact Coach Donald Spellman if you have any questions.

Congratulations: ICE Assistant Coach Brian O’Dowd has been named to the Iowa Swimming Inc. ALL-STAR team as an Assistant Coach.  This will be Brian’s first trip on an LSC sponsored staff.

Irving B. Weber Invitational wrap-up:  It was hectic and a bit crazy at times, but the 2001 Weber Meet was reasonably successful.  We ended up with about 370 swimmers and that number alone guaranteed a busy weekend for all who volunteered. From the little guys running refreshments out to the deck to the people manning the timing equipment and especially to the other unseen but necessary support folks, a hearty congratulations and thank you is in order.  The success of any swim meet is tied directly to the level of support provided by the club’s membership and for this meet we all did a pretty good job of helping our swimmers and each other out.

We did run out of participation awards for our own swimmers but have no fear- a new order will be placed.  These highlighters will sport a different design and should be available before the end of the month.  We will have extras so anyone wishing to purchase an additional highlighter or two will be able to do so.

ISI Postal Meet:  All of the details about the upcoming Postal Meet are not yet known but following is a brief description.  The meet will be run on Saturday December 29th.  It will be organized as a fun meet- shorter distances, mixed relays etc.  Entry fees will be modest and awards will be given to the top three swimmers in each age for each event as tallied on a statewide basis.  After the meet, a luncheon in the Procter and Gamble room may follow.  To do this we first need a count on the number of swimmers who want to participate.  Next, parents will need to help with timing, etc. because the times will count and this will operate as a regular meet in that regard.  Therefore, if the interest and support are there, ICE will have a Postal Meet the last Saturday of December.  Please contact Kelly at 339-7579 or e-mail  keleyn@inav.net to sign-up to swim or to volunteer to help out.  More details will follow as they become available.

Officials’ Orientation:  Interested in becoming a swimming official?  If we can get enough interested individuals (five) then an Officials’ orientation can be scheduled.  This takes about two hours and consists of watching the US Swimming video on officiating, a brief talk about officiating in Iowa, and a question and answer session followed by a chance to get started on the necessary take home exam.  After passing the exam you are required to shadow other officials during four different swim meet sessions.  Once you’ve cleared these obstacles you too can carry a clipboard and write DQs!  Seriously though, the club and the sport need more officials.  As of now the burden of officiating tends to fall to a handful of parents and friends of the sport.  If you’ve ever even briefly considered becoming an official please contact Kelly at 339-7579 or e-mail at keleyn@inav.net to add your name to the list for orientation.

New Eels website:  Now that the Weber Meet is over, work can continue on the new Eels website.  It will not be flashy but it will be functional and you will be able to help.  To be included in the site will be pictures- action shots, funny kid shots, maybe even snapshots of swimmers with a brief biography.  If you have some pictures you would like to submit, keep them close at hand, we may be able to use them quite soon.  More details to follow as progress on the launch date occurs.

From friends in California:  Former Eels members Ellyn, Koren, and Michelle Schroeder are living in Bonita California and swimming with South Bay Aquatics.  It sounds like a totally different swim environment- the meets and practices are mostly outdoors and Ellyn goes to meets where there are 140 other swimmers in some freestyle events!  Donna and the kids would love to hear from any and all of their old Eels pals and they can be reached at: 3920 Rock River Lane Bonita, CA 91902 or via e-mail at schroe5@home.com. Do consider writing these former club members!

From the communications chair:  If you are having problems communicating with the club please let me know.  Generally some sort of accommodation can be worked out.  Just call Kelly at 339-7579 or e-mail at keleyn@inav.net and we can try to work out any difficulties that might exist.
