Open
Open to all swimmers regardless of swimming ability
Q Minus
Only open to swimmers who do not have a Q-time the event they are entering in. For example, a swimmer cannot enter in any event for which he has a Q time, but he/she can enter in individual events as long has he/she does not have a Q time in that event
Q Plus (Q+)
Open only to swimmers who have a Q time in one event for each session. A swimmer may enter in events for which he/she does not have a Q time as long as he/she is entered in one event for each session for which he/she holds a Q time.
Q Meet (Qualifiers Only)
Swimmers may only enter in events for which he/she has a qualifying time. This is the case for championship events. There is usually a penalty for swimmers who fail to show proof of a qualifying time at these meets.
Q Times
Every four years USA Swimming establishes motivational times for swimmers based on a formula of how swimmers are performing nationwide. These times allow swimmers to compare their times with the times of other competive swimmers. Download current motivational times here.
